Bobby Zamora stepped up his comeback from a knee injury by scoring a hat-trick for the reserves.

The 27-year-old striker has only featured in four first-team matches this season and has not played since August.

Hammers manager Alan Curbishley has also been without Craig Bellamy with an abdominal problem recently, with reports earlier in the week suggesting the Wales striker may be ruled out for the campaign if he requires more surgery.

Zamora, however, is cautious about rushing a return to the first team after netting his treble against Birmingham City's second string.

He said: "It's been a long time. I don't want to go into the first team not fully fit and that is the main thing."

"I don't want to go out and not do the team justice and not do myself justice really. Making sure I am fit enough is important."

"I want to take it slowly, I don't want to break down. I want to make sure I am 100 per cent before I go back and try and fight for my place in the first team."
